"description": "Adaptive behavior requires control over automatic tendencies to approach reward and avoid threat. Dysregulation of this control characterizes disorders such as anxiety or addiction, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated circuits engaged during approach-avoidance control using fMRI with concurrent eye-tracking, and behavioral measures. Forty participants (22 females) completed an approach-avoidance conflict task with free‑ and forced‑choice trials. Each trial comprised anticipation, response (using a joystick to approach/obtain or avoid/forgo outcomes), and outcome phases. Before scanning, participants were instructed and experienced that conditioned stimuli (CS) predicted an aversive painful stimulation (avCS+), an appetitive monetary reward (appCS+), both outcomes (confCS+), or no outcome (neuCS−). Discordant responses (e.g., approaching avCS+) were slower than concordant responses (e.g., avoiding avCS+), confirming heightened control demands. Overcoming threat-driven avoidance specifically recruited the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), while suppressing reward-driven approach lacked distinct neural signatures. During anticipation, confCS+ and avCS+ showed overlapping activation in salience–control networks, including middle/anterior cingulate cortex (MCC/ACC), anterior insula, IFG, and ventral striatum (VS). Interestingly, confCS+ evoked threat-like anticipatory neurophysiological responses (pupil dilation; ACC/insula activation) but subsequently triggered reward-like approach behavior. Multivariate pattern and psychophysiological interaction analyses revealed that this dissociation was driven by differential encoding of upcoming responses in the ventral striatum during the anticipation phase and by altered functional coupling between the VS and the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ). These findings indicate that motivational control prioritizes salience over valence and suggest a VS-rTPJ network for resolving approach-avoidance conflicts, offering novel insights into neural dynamics of flexible goal-directed behavior.",

"description": "Schizophrenia is characterized by significant cognitive and social difficulties, including paranoid ideation and impaired trust in others. Despite consistent evidence of disrupted social interactions in schizophrenia, the neurocognitive mechanisms driving these impairments remain poorly understood. Here, we tested the hypothesis that schizophrenia is associated with altered neural processing of others’ cooperative behavior, leading to disrupted belief formation and reduced trust. In a sample of individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (N=39) and healthy controls (N=39) playing a computerized investment game, we show that individuals affected by schizophrenia trusted their game partners less, which was due to reduced sensitivity to partner reciprocity and greater variability in trust behavior. Computational modeling shows that, while both groups learned the partner’s behavior equally well, individuals with schizophrenia were less likely to act on their beliefs about partner benevolence. Neuroimaging results show that during encoding of partner reciprocity, the putamen was more engaged and functionally connected with the precuneus in healthy controls. Reduced functional connectivity between putamen and precuneus was further associated with less successful trusting interactions (lower payoffs) in individuals with schizophrenia as compared with control participants. These results indicate that reduced belief reliance (acting less on formed beliefs about others) rather than impaired belief formation drives distrust in clinical populations.",

"description": "Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties in language comprehension and production, despite otherwise typical cognitive abilities. Although DLD is most commonly studied in children, it often persists into adulthood, yet little is known about the neural substrates underlying language abilities in adults with DLD. To address this gap, we examined 50 adults with (n = 23) and without DLD (n = 27) using an fMRI language localizer paradigm. Participants passively listened to intelligible and acoustically degraded speech, to assess both lower-level auditory processing and higher-level language comprehension. We also administered standardized language assessments to relate behavioral performance to neural activation patterns. Results indicated that auditory processing in DLD is largely intact, as both groups showed comparable activation in bilateral auditory cortices during degraded speech. In contrast, during comprehension of intact speech, adults with DLD recruited additional domain-general regions, including bilateral midline, frontal, and parietal areas. This pattern suggests compensatory or effortful engagement of broader cognitive systems to support comprehension, even during a very simple task. Critically, participants whose activation patterns more closely resembled canonical left-lateralized language networks demonstrated stronger performance on standardized language measures, implying that diffuse network recruitment may come at a cognitive cost. Overall, these findings indicate that while adults with DLD can achieve functional language comprehension, they do so through altered neural pathways.",

"description": "This dataset contains ABCD-protocol single-echo BOLD scans, along with complex-valued, multi-echo BOLD scans for comparison. The multi-echo BOLD protocol uses the CMRR MB-EPI sequence, and comes from collaborators at UMinn. These scans include five echoes with both magnitude and phase reconstruction. The primary goal of this dataset was to evaluate the usability of the multi-echo fMRI protocol in a larger study, via direct comparison to the ABCD fMRI protocol, as well as via test-retest reliability analyses. However, these data may be useful to others (e.g., for testing complex-valued models, applying phase regression to multi-echo data, testing multi-echo denoising methods). This neurovault collection contains the nilearn GLM outputs from the task scans. The raw data and derivates can be found on openneuro.",

"description": "Functional neuroimaging studies consistently show that episodic recollection engages the default mode network (DMN), yet the extent to which this engagement varies with the representational content of retrieved information remains unclear. The present meta-analysis examined whether verbal and visual recollection differentially recruit the DMN. Twenty-four verbal and 19 visual studies were included; recollection was operationalized using subjective measures, and network correspondence was assessed using the Yeo 17-network parcellation. Both forms of recollection engaged the DMN, but verbal recollection showed stronger and more widespread recruitment across all three DMN subnetworks. Direct contrasts likewise revealed consistent preferential associations for verbal over visual recollection across all DMN subdivisions. Separate analyses of word-, object-, and scene-based recollection further supported this verbal bias in DMN engagement. This bias may reflect a greater reliance of verbal recollection on DMN-supported conceptual integration, or semantic scaffolding, than visual recollection. More broadly, the representational content of remembered events—particularly along the verbal–visual dimension—may constitute an important organizing principle of DMN function in episodic memory and help account for variability across prior neuroimaging findings, with potential implications for other DMN-supported domains.",

"description": "Source-correct responses are often assumed to reflect strong, recollective retrieval, yet the structure of standard source memory paradigms suggests that they may instead depend on weaker, strategically controlled processes. To clarify the functional nature of source memory, a quantitative meta-analysis was conducted on 48 fMRI studies comparing source memory (source-correct > new), recollection (remember > new), and familiarity (know > new) contrasts. Activation Likelihood Estimation combined with network-based analyses identified convergent activity across both voxelwise and large-scale network levels. Source memory was characterized by dominant engagement of the frontoparietal network and limited involvement of the default mode network—an architecture indicative of effortful, control-based retrieval. Direct contrasts further revealed that this neural profile diverges sharply from recollection but closely parallels familiarity. These findings suggest that standard source memory paradigms primarily capture deliberate, control-based retrieval, refining its neural characterization and situating it along a continuum between controlled and spontaneous retrieval.",

"description": "Understanding the mechanisms behind academic buoyancy, the ability to effectively cope with everyday academic challenges, is essential for identifying the factors and mechanisms that help students maintain their motivation and cope with routine academic pressures. One potential underlying mechanism is reward sensitivity, or the capacity to experience pleasure both in anticipating and receiving reward-related stimuli. We hypothesized that individuals with higher sensitivity to anticipated reward would exhibit greater academic buoyancy. To test this in an academic context, we modified the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task into a School Grade Incentive Delay (SGID) task, where participants work towards a fictitious school grade by winning or losing points on each of the trials. In this study, we investigated whether the SGID activates the neural reward circuitry similar to the traditional MID and whether this is associated with academic buoyancy. The SGID task activated key brain regions associated with reward anticipation, validating its use for studying reward processing in academic contexts. However, we found no significant correlation between reward-related neural activations and academic buoyancy. Further research in larger samples is needed to capture the full complexity of reward processing in relation to academic buoyancy.",

"description": "Self-report questionnaires are widely used across psychology and related disciplines, yet the cognitive and neural processes underlying how individuals generate responses to such items remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether items from the same psychological scale evoke similar neural activation patterns in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a region consistently implicated in self-referential processing. While undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), participants completed a self-reference task in which they judged how well 72 personality-related questionnaire items (e.g., from the Big Five, emotion regulation, and well-being scales) described themselves. Using representational similarity analysis (RSA), we found that items from the same scale elicited more similar multivoxel activation patterns in the mPFC compared to items from different scales. This effect was specific to the self-reference task and was not observed during a semantic judgment control task using the same items. Furthermore, the mPFC encoded not only categorical scale membership but also graded psychological similarity among scales, as reflected in inter-scale behavioral correlations. Importantly, these effects remained significant even after controlling for sentence-level semantic similarity using multiple regression RSA, indicating that the observed neural structure reflects psychological rather than linguistic similarity. These findings suggest that the mPFC integrates internally constructed evidence in a construct-sensitive manner during self-report, and they open new avenues for linking psychological assessment with neural representation. We discuss the implications for understanding self-report as a cognitive process and for future work on neuroimaging-informed scale validation.",
